Starting my business
When I mapped out the road to starting my own business, I made an intentional decision to give myself a warmup season. Time to move gently from theory to practice, observing what resonates with others and within myself. Here are 4 things I’ve learned.
😃 I believe my superpower is finding patterns in a sea of scattered information. Throw me every random thought, emotion, feeling, or experience you’ve had, and I can help you see the system that unites them. This was a skill I developed at Microsoft helping others unearth their emotionally resonant ideas and soundbites, and it’s been encouraging to see how I’ve carried this forward into coaching. To do this while I hold safe and compassionate space for others to explore their sense of well-being has brought me so much joy. So, so much joy.
😅 After eight years in the corporate world, being simple and specific is hard. Like really hard. It goes against every ambition of scale I was raised on. The fear of missing out makes you feel like you must be everything to everyone, rather than speaking clearly and directly to the people you know you can best serve. I’ve been lucky to receive some incredible coaching (hi Jennifer Marcou!) that has helped me begin to release myself from this trap. When I launched earlier this month, I had 6 variations of coaching services. Today, I only have 3.
😠 I hate social media influencer branding on Instagram. There, the sacred notion of wellness has been reduced down to a million little pastel-colored squares. When did we start equating the full vibrancy of life with a template so devoid of it? I won’t be participating in that branded nonsense, even if it means I seem less “legit” to the onlooker. Social media is my unhealthy craving. As an occasional indulgence, it brings me the satisfaction of community and creative performance. But binging will only bring disease.
🥰 Letting my gut guide my choices has been wonderful. Being able to move through this process unhurried, picking tasks as I have energy for them, has felt warm and healing. That’s the gift of having full agency and autonomy as a business owner. I hope to keep moving with ease—intuitively and intentionally—as my business grows and matures.
