10 lessons in year one with MS

“Findings are concerning for a demyelinating disorder including multiple sclerosis.” 1 year ago today I read the MRI results that would alter the course of my life. Here are 10 things I’ve learned as I’ve navigated my first year with a multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

1. The love of family and community can carry you through anything in life.

2. Sometimes it’s simpler to talk to kind strangers on the internet.

3. It’s easy to get lost in the fear of an unknowable future—and quite hard to stay in the safety of the present.

4. Having no choice but to honor your health and well-being is truly a gift.

5. Insurance companies are scams.

6. A sense of purpose and a creative outlet are more powerful than therapy.

7. Sometimes you just have to say f*ck it and deal with the consequences later.

8. The right partner will know how to carry the weight of your grief.

9. Modern medical science and ancient medical wisdom are better together.

10. When in doubt, rest.
